AT 618 - Pharmacology in Athletic Training


This course examines evidence-based pharmacological principles essential to athletic training practice, including mechanisms of drug action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, therapeutic indications, contraindications, adverse effects, drug interactions, and monitoring considerations. Content focuses on medications commonly encountered in athletic, clinical, and emergency care settings, including those used to manage pain and inflammation, infections, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, neurological and mental health disorders, and endocrine and metabolic conditions in physically active populations. Emphasis is placed on medications affecting performance, recovery, and risk of injury, ethical and legal considerations, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration, with application through case-based, patient-centered clinical decision-making.
