COM 237 - Gender, Sex & Identity in the Media: How do media representations of gender and sexuality shape culture and identity? How does what we see and hear in the media influence our understanding of power, possibility, and expectation of gendered performance? This course addresses the intersection of communication, culture, and identity through a close look at gender in traditional and digital media systems. Course topics include theoretical approaches to studying gender and mediated communication; media representations of gender, sexuality, and identity on digital platforms; gendered fan cultures; and gender diversity in media industries and labor markets. Topics vary from semester to semester. May be repeated under different topics.
