PED 125 - Outdoor Activity:


Study of various outdoor adventures such as Backpacking, Wilderness First Aid, Rock Climbing, etc. Topics vary from semester to semester. May be repeated under different topics. Rock Climbing: This course is designed for students with little or no rock-climbing experience. The class will cover basic climbing skills including knot tying, belaying, rappelling, top rope anchor systems, and safety procedures. It will also cover how to apply the principles of Leave No Trace to the rock-climbing activity. Wilderness First Aid: This 16-hour national certification course covers first aid and patient care in remote settings. It covers wound and infection management, realigning fractures, dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring, and long-term management problems, and up-to-date information on environmental emergencies. Essentials of Backpacking: This practical and experiential course is designed for students with little or no backpacking experience. The course involves discussions, demonstrations, and activities to teach students the basics of backpacking. Topics covered will include equipment selection, map and compass skills, back country cooking, mapping out your trip, staying healthy in the outdoors, safety and emergency procedures, environmental ethics (Leave No Trace), and natural history. Application of these skills will be implemented during a weekend backpacking trip during which students will also have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in a collaborative team environment.
