LIT 320 - Early American Literature This course introduces students to a range of texts in various genres, including captivity and conversion narratives, sermons, poetry, prose, and novels before 1865, and discusses significant historical and social events and movements such as New World exploration/expansion, religion, chattel slavery, and Revolutionary War, the Indian Removal Act, the American Renaissance, and issues regarding voting rights and citizenship. Early American literature can be read as responses to these events.
