LIT 221 - Textual Perspectives: Asian American Literature

This course explores the rich body of literature produced by writers of Asian heritage in the United States. Materials will include poetry, fiction, memoirs, and more. “Asian” is a broad category that represents people whose common racial categorization belies their very diverse histories and traditions, not only in their home nations, but also in the United States, where waves of immigration, labor practices, attempts at assimilation, and shifting prejudices have variously affected the transition from “Asian” to “Asian American.” This unique perspective of being “between worlds” makes these writers of great interest. This course satisfies the American Literature component of the Literature major and fulfills the Human Diversity requirement.
