The Associate of Science (A.S.) in Emergency Medicine Management at Alvernia University prepares students to become skilled paramedics capable of delivering high-quality emergency medical services. This program emphasizes professional competence, ethical service, and ongoing professional development. Students acquire technical training in one of two ways: prior completion of an accredited Paramedicine program before matriculating into Alvernia University or by completing the technical training while enrolled in the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences (RHSHS) Paramedic Program. Graduates will be well-prepared to serve individuals, families, and communities compassionately and professionally.
Pathway 1: Dual-Admission through RHSHS
The Emergency Medicine Management (EMM) program leading to an Associate of Science degree is a dual-admission degree program between Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences (RHSHS) and Alvernia University. In addition to the Associate of Science degree, students will also receive a certificate in Paramedicine (Paramedic) from RHSHS. The RHSHS Paramedic Program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) through the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). Additional information regarding CAAHEP can be obtained by contacting the organization directly at 25400 US Highway 19 North Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33756. Ph. 727-210-2350. The RHSHS Paramedic Program is also approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The Paramedic Program student admission is the responsibility and at the discretion of RHSHS. Admission standards meet and/or exceed Alvernia University’ s admission standards. Admission to the Paramedic Program is competitive, and the selection of students is based on overall qualifications and the number of available seats in the program. Applicants must be current Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) who have worked in that role for a minimum of one year. Refer to the RHSHS Admissions Office for details on the application process, related qualifications, and deadlines. Once students are admitted to the Paramedic Program, RHSHS will collaborate with Alvernia University to complete the registration and enrollment process for Alvernia University.
Pathway 2: Transfer of Credits for Certified Paramedics
Individuals who have successfully completed an accredited Paramedicine program and earned certification as a paramedic can transfer up to 42 credits of paramedic education to Alvernia University. The additional coursework beyond the 42 transferred credits is an integral part of the
A.S. in Emergency Medicine Management, designed to build upon the technical paramedic training. It strengthens essential skills in communication, critical thinking, leadership, and ethical decision-making, ensuring graduates are well-rounded professionals prepared for diverse roles in emergency medical services. These credits will be applied toward the Associate of Science in Emergency Medicine Management. Eligible students must provide documentation of their accredited paramedic education and certification for evaluation and credit transfer.
