Studying Humanities means exploring the culture, meaning and values of people and societies as expressed in their traditions, forms of expression, and institutions. Historically, the emphasis of Franciscanism on the dignity of humanity and the goodness of the natural world has encouraged the flourishing of humanities through appreciation of the human experience, ethical inquiry, compassionate service, and artistic expression.

The digital revolution has radically changed the way that many Humanities scholars conduct research and share work. Digital Humanities applies emerging digital and media technologies to these explorations, expanding the access to and participation in this scholarship. At the same time, the Digital Humanities major also helps students think critically and ethically about the social and cultural impact of these new technologies. Students majoring in Digital Humanities will gain skills in digital tools and how they are being used to explore topics in humanities, art, and cultural heritage. By its nature, Digital Humanities practices can be used in many different disciplines, and students will benefit from a multidisciplinary approach to the topic. Digital Humanities requires creative approaches, analytical skills, and innovative communication and interpretation of traditional humanities questions through advanced use of digital skills, preparing students to navigate the rapidly changing world.

Majoring in Digital Humanities will explore topics such as digital text analysis, digital mapping, 3D modeling, and the use of digital tools for collecting, organizing and studying material culture, as well as consider ethical concerns raised by data bias, data privacy, and algorithms.
